The occupiers attacked a Red Cross humanitarian mission — an investigation has been launched into the death of three and the injury of two of its staff members. This was reported by the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor's Office.
"On September 12, 2024, the russian army committed another war crime in the Donetsk oblast. The armed forces of the aggressor state, likely using barrel artillery, struck vehicles of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the village of Veroliubivka, the Kostiantynivka Municipal Territorial Community. ICRC staff had arrived in the village to distribute fuel briquettes to local residents for heating their homes. At the time of the shelling, they were unloading the delivered aid", - the statement reads.
As a result of the attack, three men aged 40, 41, and 48 died on the spot. Two of their colleagues, aged 35 and 41, sustained shrapnel wounds and blast injuries. They were taken to a medical facility. One of the injured is in serious condition.
"Under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into a criminal case regarding the violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)", - the prosecutor's office added.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this tragic incident is "yet another russian war crime".
"In this war, everything is perfectly clear: russia brings evil, Ukraine defends life. And if anyone wants to hear 'both sides', then in russia, it is perceived only as permission to continue killing. The world must respond harshly and decisively. Neither countries nor international organizations can remain indifferent. Only together can the world force russia to stop this terror and compel moscow to seek peace", - Zelensky believes.
