President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the "language law". The signing of the document was broadcast on the president's Facebook.

"Today, by signing the law on functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language, we are committing one of the main acts for the preservation of Ukrainian statehood", - he noted on Twitter.

"Language is the foundation on which the nation and state are built. I emphasize that this law does not affect a single language of national minorities living in Ukraine. I am proud that over the past 5 years, I managed to do it without pressure or coercion, so the legal response do not harm anyone", - he wrote.

As reported earlier, on April 25, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language in almost all areas of public life. The law was supported by 278 people's deputies. The Opposition Bloc and Revival factions were strongly against the adoption of the law, which blocked the signing of the bill after the voting.

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy signed the law No. 5670-d "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language" on May 14.
