The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that there was no legal basis to deprive separatists of citizenship. This is stated in reply to the e-petition №22 / 001799-ep "The deprivation of citizenship of persons for separatism".

Poroshenko noted that he shared the view of the inevitability of punishment for perpetrators of crimes against the foundations of national security. However, the reply said that the analysis of the current legislation in the field of citizenship and the Criminal Code showed "a lack of legal basis for deprivation of citizenship for infringement on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine".

"However, I appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers with a proposal to work out questions raised in the e-petition using the world experience in solving such problems and take measures in accordance with the law", - said Poroshenko.

The e-petition to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on deprivation of citizenship of Ukraine for the separatist gained the necessary 26,744 signatures. This result is posted on the official Internet representative website of the President.

"I, a citizen of Ukraine Lazarenko Igor, propose to take all necessary legislative and executive steps for the introduction of amendments and additions to the Constitution, laws, codes to create the legal enforceability of deprivation of citizenship of persons who through their public statements or actions promote criminal separatism and infringement on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine (in case of any empirical evidence)", - notes the author of the petition, a citizen of Ukraine Igor Lazavenko.
