UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a truce during the Olympics, highlighting the shared ideals of sports and the UN. He made this statement in a video message that will be broadcast during the opening of the Games on Friday in Paris, as reported by Ukrinform.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized the power of sports to "bring hope, transcend cultures, unite people, and promote mutual respect and fair play".

According to him, these ideals, which are fundamental to the Olympic Games, are also the ideals of the United Nations.

"In the spirit of the Olympic Truce, I call on everyone to lay down their arms, build bridges, strengthen solidarity, and strive for the ultimate goal – peace for all", - Guterres stated.

He also addressed the athletes who will compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. "You inspire us to dream bigger", - said the UN Secretary-General.

It was previously reported that Pope Francis also expressed hopes for a truce during the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Games will be held in France from July 26 to August 11.
