The United States will send Ukraine approximately $125 million in new military aid. U.S. officials made this announcement on August 22, as reported by "Voice of America".
The new aid package is planned despite Washington still trying to better understand Kyiv's progress in russia and how it serves broader battlefield objectives. According to U.S. officials, the new aid will include air defense missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), Javelin missiles, and a range of other anti-tank missiles, systems and equipment for countering unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare tools, 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, vehicles, and other equipment.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as the aid has not yet been publicly announced. An official announcement could be made today, ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day.
It is noted that the weapons will be provided under presidential authority to draw from Pentagon stockpiles, allowing them to be delivered quickly.
Pentagon representatives have repeatedly stated that the U.S. is in discussions with Ukrainian leaders to better understand long-term goals regarding the Kursk operation, particularly in light of reports of russian advances near Pokrovsk. If Pokrovsk falls, it would threaten Ukraine's defense and bring russia closer to its declared goal of capturing the Donetsk oblast. Russian soldiers are currently just 10 kilometers away.
With this new aid package, the total U.S. security assistance to Ukraine since russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 will exceed $55.7 billion.
