This assessment was made by 62-year-old Bruno Kahl, the head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (foreign intelligence), during hearings in the Bundestag, as reported by the Telegram channel "BILD na russkom".
According to Bruno Kahl, putin is not only focused on Ukraine but also on "actually creating a new world order", and russian intelligence services are acting more aggressively "without any qualms".
"By the end of this decade, the russian armed forces are likely to be able to launch an attack on NATO", - Kahl said. "The kremlin considers Germany an enemy. <..> We are in direct confrontation with russia. <..> Putin will be testing the West's 'red lines'".
Thomas Haldenwang, the head of Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution (counterintelligence), also spoke at the hearings. "We are witnessing aggressive actions by russian intelligence services", - he said. In his view, russian espionage and sabotage in Germany are increasing "both qualitatively and quantitatively".
Martina Rosenberg, head of the Military Counterintelligence Service, stated that the number of surveillance attempts on so-called critical infrastructure has become "alarmingly" high. "The focus is on the Bundeswehr, whether it is German arms deliveries to Ukraine, military training, weapons production, or sabotage aimed at creating a sense of insecurity through acts of sabotage", - she said.
