A country that is at war cannot become a NATO member, so Ukraine's invitation to the Alliance is not on the agenda, stated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing ZDF.

Scholz reminded that NATO made decisions regarding Ukraine's membership prospects at the summits in Vilnius and Washington, and in his view, "there is no need for any new decisions beyond this for now".

"A country that is at war cannot become a NATO member. Everyone knows this, and there is no disagreement on the matter. And in NATO, invitations are usually quite quickly linked to membership", - he added.

Furthermore, the German Chancellor stated that russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine requires measured actions that, on one hand, guarantee support for Kyiv, while on the other, ensure it does not escalate into a war between moscow and NATO.

"This is where I am very clear about my position and will not change it", - he emphasized.

It is worth noting that earlier, NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Gerry Connolly said that Ukraine is on an irreversible path to NATO membership, but the best option would be to liberate all its territories before joining the Alliance.
