Germany will need to send a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated on Deutschlandfunk, as reported by “The Moscow Times” Telegram channel.
“We cannot seriously discuss this today, but someday we will have to”, - said Pistorius.
He emphasized, however, that until the "hot phase" of the war ends, Berlin rules out the presence of German troops in the conflict zone. According to him, the German government is currently "working through scenarios regarding what will happen after the end of hostilities in Ukraine". He declined to provide further details, noting that it would “help no one”.
The report recalls that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had previously suggested the possibility of sending German troops to Ukraine to ensure peace. She stated that the presence of foreign forces along the line of demarcation could serve as an additional security guarantee for Kyiv alongside NATO membership. Baerbock also stressed that Germany “will support with all its strength anything that serves peace”, but the final decision on the matter would be up to Ukraine itself.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ruled out sending German soldiers to Ukraine “in this military situation”. He also firmly denied that Baerbock had made such a statement.
