Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó effectively threatened to block Ukraine's accession to the EU in response to the registration of a bill in the Ukrainian parliament that proposes banning the transit of russian oil and gas during martial law. He wrote about this on Facebook on January 8.
"The reality: in EU member states, decisions on admitting new members are made unanimously. In other words, every member state must vote 'yes' (...) A country that signs an association agreement with the EU and even wants to become an EU member must contribute to the EU's energy security by providing transport routes. Therefore, closing natural gas and oil transport routes is unacceptable and contradicts the expectations of EU integration", - Szijjártó stated.
