In recent days, Kyiv has attempted to regain the initiative in the Kursk oblast, as well as in the areas of Toretsk and Pokrovsk, according to Le Figaro.
Recently, the pace of russian troop advances in Ukraine has slowed, and the Defense Forces have resumed limited counterattacks on several parts of the front.
In this context, the publication noted that Ukraine is trying to strengthen its positions as much as possible. According to a source, the goal is to buy time by presenting russians with tactical dilemmas that will complicate their offensive and slow down the pace of their attacks.
At the same time, Le Figaro writes that these localized Ukrainian counterattacks are not enough to change the overall situation on the battlefield. The russians maintain the initiative and continue to advance by approximately 10 square kilometers per day.
Citing a military source, the publication noted that in the context of a war of attrition, and "given Ukraine’s level of exhaustion, these counterattacks are not a long-term strategy". However, in the short term, they allow Ukraine to strengthen its positions ahead of potential peace negotiations with the kremlin.
