U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated on Thursday that the United States may impose new anti-russian sanctions if russian president putin does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that guarantees Kyiv’s long-term independence. Vance made this statement in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
The vice president added that he believes the agreement resulting from negotiations to end the war in Ukraine will "shock people".
According to him, the option of deploying U.S. troops to Ukraine "remains under consideration" in Washington in case moscow refuses to resolve the conflict. He stated that the U.S. could use "economic leverage and, of course, military leverage" against russia.
The vice president believes it is too early to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine from the U.S. and the West. This issue, along with questions about Ukraine’s and russia’s borders, will be discussed in negotiations, Vance said.
"There are different formulations, configurations, but it is important for us that Ukraine maintains its sovereign independence", - the U.S. vice president asserted.
Vance also revealed the U.S. administration's plans to convince putin that russia could achieve more at the negotiating table than on the battlefield.
Commenting on Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth’s statement about the unrealistic prospect of returning to Ukraine’s 2014 borders, Vance said that Trump’s stance could change depending on the negotiations.
It was previously reported that Trump announced a meeting between representatives of the U.S., Ukraine, and russia in Munich and Saudi Arabia.
