U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. would be ready to resume engagement with Ukrainian authorities when they are "ready to make peace". The official said this in an interview with ABC News, as reported by LIGA.
Rubio recalled Donald Trump’s post following a dispute with Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the U.S. leader stated that the Ukrainian president "can return when he is ready for peace".
"He [Trump] is trying to bring russia to the negotiating table to see if there is a way to end this conflict. That is his goal... And, you know, hopefully, we will reach a point where that becomes possible", - the secretary of state said.
He stated that he had not had any contact with Zelensky since February 28, when the dispute occurred at the White House. At the same time, the official added that the U.S. and Ukraine had "many contacts" in the ten days leading up to that: Zelensky met with the U.S. Treasury Secretary, Secretary of State, and Vice President before being invited to Washington.
"I spoke several times with the Foreign Minister [of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiha]. Since then [since February 28]—no. And we will see what happens next", - Rubio noted.
It was previously reported that Trump's team stated that the U.S. needs a Ukrainian leader who can secure peace with russia.
