Many factors indicate that the mineral resources agreement was planned to be signed in the White House, but at some point, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine lost their temper. Political expert Kostiantyn Matvienko told OstroV about this.
"The main version I lean toward is that both Zelensky and Trump were prepared to sign the agreement (on rare earth metals – ed.). At some point, they lost their temper and spontaneously refused to sign. This is confirmed by the fact that the agreement was thoroughly worked out by the Cabinet of Ministers and was indeed adapted to Ukrainian legislation. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury was present in the Oval Office that day, so everything suggests that the signing was expected", - Matvienko believes.
According to him, due to a provocation by Vice President J.D. Vance and the fact that Trump was unable to restrain himself, the conversation was ultimately cut short at the initiative of the American president.
At the same time, Kostiantyn Matvienko does not rule out that the United States never intended to sign the agreement in the first place and lured Zelensky into the Oval Office to publicly humiliate him.
"The attempt failed, which was evident during the conversation itself and especially in the reaction to it in the United States and the European Union. The fact that the King of the United Kingdom received Zelensky immediately after this also has great symbolic significance. Although the king has no political power, his role in the Commonwealth is important. This underscores a split in the Saxon world", - the political expert noted.
Moreover, he concluded, there is also a version that neither Zelensky nor Trump initially planned to sign the agreement, and both were deliberately aiming for its disruption.
As previously reported, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. would be ready to resume engagement with the Ukrainian authorities when they "are ready to make peace".
