The first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, died on April 21. Reuters reports this with reference to the Vatican.
He was 88 years old and had survived a severe bout of double pneumonia.
"This morning at 7:35, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father", - the Vatican's statement reads.
Francis died the day after the Pope made his first extended public appearance following his discharge on March 23 after a 38-day hospital stay due to pneumonia.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope under the name Francis on March 13, 2013.
