Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the US made “a very clear proposal” to russia and Ukraine regarding a path to a peace agreement, adding that “it’s time for them to either say ‘yes’, or the US will walk away from the process”. This was reported by the BBC citing Bloomberg.
Vance told reporters that both Ukraine and russia would have to give up some of the territory they are claiming.
“There will have to be some territorial exchanges”, - Vance said, adding that the border may not mirror the current front line.
Freezing the conflict along the existing front line would be a massive sacrifice for Ukraine, which aims to regain all the territories in the east and south of the country seized by russia since 2014, including Crimea, Bloomberg commented.
The US is prepared to recognize russia’s control over Crimea and ease sanctions on moscow as part of a potential peace agreement, agency sources previously reported. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his country will not recognize the russian occupation of Crimea.
